Safer Internet Day 2011
Safer Internet Day 2011 was celebrated on Tuesday 8th February. This International annual event, which is organised by European Internet Safety Network (INSAFE) and is co-funded by the European Commissions Safer Internet Programme, takes place every February to promote safe and responsible use of the internet and mobile phone technologies, especially amongst children and young people. | |
Just like with past years, the safer internet day celebrations included local, national and international events organised by a broad variety of organisations ranging from schools and youth clubs to industry, civil society and local and national government agencies.
SID was first celebrated in 2004, participation in this event has been steadily growing, with an increase in general awareness, stronger involvement of relevant stakeholders in the field of internet safety and a high level of media interest. It is expected that Safer Internet Day 2011 will be celebrated in over 60 countries worldwide.
What will happen on Safer Internet Day 2011?
To mark Safer Internet Day 2011 in Ireland, webwise on Facebook, www.facebook.com/webwise, was formally launched along with the publication of the EU Kids Online: Ireland Report. The National Centre for Technology in Education's Webwise initiative set up a Facebook presence to help parents to get involved in what their children are doing online. It contains internet safety parenting videos, interactive games, advice and tools.
The Office for Internet Safety produced an information leaflet on Internet safety, an Internet Safety bookmark as well as an awareness poster highlighting the top tips for keeping safer on the Internet. These were distributed to each Library Authority and were made available in public libraries on Safer Internet Day.
